Not counting Mozilla Firefox / Thunderbird and OpenOffice.org, here my top ten open source programs:
- 7-Zip is a file archiver with a high compression ratio.
- Launchy indexes the programs in your start menu and can launch your documents, project files, folders, and bookmarks with just a few keystrokes!
- Notepad++ is a free (free as in "free speech", but also as in "free beer") source code editor and Notepad replacement, which supports several programming languages, running under the MS Windows environment.
- Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for computers that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools.
- PDFCreator is a free tool to create PDF files from nearly any Windows application.
- Pidgin is a multi-protocol Instant Messaging client that allows you to use all of your IM accounts at once.
- Really Slick Screensavers! Writing 3D OpenGL screensavers is a fun hobby for me.
- Stellarium is a free open source planetarium for your computer. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope.
- UltraVNC is a powerful, easy to use and free software that can display the screen of another computer (via internet or network) on your own screen. The program allows you to use your mouse and keyboard to control the other PC remotely.
- VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.
